This collection of wheel-thrown & sculptured ceramics is inspired by the enigmatic Greek goddess Baubo, a symbol of unrestrained joy and liberation. Introduced to me through artist Tia Thomas, Baubo has arrived to remind me of the power of Mirth.
Throughout my practice, I have found that moments of unfiltered mirth serve as potent catalysts for creativity and personal growth. These fleeting instances of laughter and delight disrupt habitual thought patterns, offering glimpses of a freer, more expansive reality. For me, mirth is a sword that cuts through oppression, a force that empowers and inspires.
In this collection, I pay homage to Baubo through a central piece featuring the goddess herself, surrounded by smaller, playful forms representing the spirit of mirth. A small sculpture representing Hydra, a mythical serpent symbolising the multifaceted challenges we encounter in life, also resides within this collection. Each head of the Hydra represents a different obstacle, yet Mirth's ability to conquer these challenges and reveal the hidden treasure hiding behind the monster.
The volcanic rock and oceanic tones of the glazes, developed in collaboration with Sorrel Bifield, reflect the raw, elemental energy that underlies my work.
Through these ceramic forms, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder, joy, and empowerment. Like a playful philosopher, I invite viewers to experience the liberating power of mirth and to find their own inner strength in the face of life's challenges.
